Hello and welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!

Thank you to all those who visited last weekend! I've been sharing snippets from the fourth book in my Shifter Towers series, HIS OMEGA ON STAGE, which will release through Decadent Publishing. Like all the other books in this series, it is an MM paranormal romance. I'll keep you posted when I know anything about a release date.

Set-up: In last weekend's snippet, Jun found out that he would be Ash's personal guard. He also noticed that his leopard cat was actual active around Ash, when it usually wasn't. 

In this weekend's snippet, I'm switching back to Ash's point of view, and giving you an idea of how the signing is going for him.

Why did I think that having Jun so close to me during the event would be a good idea? I had far more confidence when I’d first suggested the idea to the Event Coordinator, Tony, until I came face-to-face with Jun again. Last night I’d been too shocked by the sight of him that I hadn’t really noticed how he’d changed over the years. His jaw had widened. Actually, his whole body was wider, more muscular. My brother used to call him a beanpole, saying he’d never be a good alpha, but Nex couldn’t say that now. And then there were Jun’s tattoos. Guitars, music notes, and various song lyrics—some familiar, and others not—down his arms, and the tips of what might be flames, appearing just above his shirt collar. While I’d always found him attractive, these changes made my heart race. I’d recovered my composure when I left to have my makeup and hair done for the signing, but that was short-lived.

The screening of the music video followed by the Q and A had gone well. All my fans, who had voted on the fandom name bots, respectfully sat in their seats and mostly asked about the music video, the album, and my inspiration for each song rather than more personal questions. Though someone did ask if I was seeing anyone. I’m sure they all knew by the lack of a mark and mixed scent that I hadn’t been claimed yet. Something I was nowhere near ready for. Yet, that’s the point at which I smelled him, a heady combination of pine and allspice. A scent that appealed to me even back in high school when I didn’t have the courage to do anything more than stare at Jun as he passed by me in the hall. Why had his scent suddenly become stronger at the question? Did he know it made me uncomfortable?

Jacqui raced home as if his tail were on fire.

Not so bad. Had to happen.

Left my phone, my clothes, everything behind. How will I explain it?

Oh.

Jacqui tore up his street, cut through the gap between two buildings, and scrambled up the madrone tree behind his apartment. He was in the habit of leaving his bedroom window open, just in case, and now, the in case had occurred.

He squeezed in, jumped on the bed, shook himself. 

What's that smell?

Gotta be fast. Wyatt's gonna call or come over. He's wondering where we are right now. He'll see the phone on the kitchen counter. Shit, he'll come over, make sure I'm alive.

Wait. Something's off.

No time. Shift. Now.

Jacqui was in such a rush he shifted standing on the bed. The panicky change swept over and through him so fast he toppled forward as four feet morphed into two. Most of his body landed on the mattress before momentum carried him off the side, tangled in the fluffy down comforter he loved so much.

He kicked away the blanket and jumped to his feet. How was he going to explain his disappearance this time? In a flash of genius, he grabbed his running clothes out of the closet and dressed. No time for undies or socks. His running shoes were in the downstairs closet.

He dashed down the narrow spiral staircase from his loft to the living area. It was a small studio with an open floor plan, which made it hard to miss anything out of place.

Like that smell.

Jacqui forced himself to stop moving and pay attention. Once he did, his scalp prickled and his nostrils flared. He sniffed and detected the sharp aroma of a stranger.

A cat!

It's just a cat.

Just a cat?

That stray. He snuck in here last night and peed on our stuff!

No, human, focus. He's still here.

Jacqui focused. Took a deeper breath. Cat was correct.

As usual.

The window. That stupid ruffian had discovered the open window and helped himself. Jacqui's territory, his inner sanctum, violated by a mangy stray.

What did I tell you about establishing a defensive perimeter?

Dogs can't climb trees. How was I to know I’d have to worry about cats?

He padded silently to his worktable in the middle of the room and turned a slow circle. He didn't see any damage, or the cat. Gone already? But, no. The smell was too intense, even for a stinky tom.

"Here, Kitty, Kitty", he said without much enthusiasm. "Where are you hiding?"

A rustling came from the bathroom and before Jacqui's disbelieving eyes, the doorknob began to turn.

Every muscle tightened, and the air rippled slightly as his body prepared to shift once again. To flee or fight as required. He forced himself to keep his shape, and seized up a pair of scissors from the workbench.

The bathroom door opened and a nude man stepped out.

A nude, grinning man. "Hello," he said. "Hope you don't mind that I used your shower."

Prepared only to snarl, Jacqui managed to choke out, "Mind? Of course I mind. Who the hell are you?"

"Reggie. We met last night." The grin became stiff and the man's nervousness seeped through his initial bravado. Man-boy. Young. Early twenties. Lanky but muscular. Big, almost buggy brown eyes. A close-cut, amateurish hair cut that might have been self-inflicted with garden shears. Toothy smile. Cute as all get out. Rough boy manner. Rough like that mangy stray—

Cat!

Jacqui couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Couldn't stop clutching the scissors like a mad man.

"You okay, dude?" the man asked.

Cat man. Cat shifter. One of his people. Jacqui's people. Here in the flesh. All the flesh.

Set-up: In last weekend's snippet, Jun got to meet AI, who he found out was also Ash Reyes, who he remembered from high school. They aren't the same age, but Ash has an older brother who is the same age as Jun.

In this weekend's snippet, Jun finds out exactly what his security duties will entail.

“Okay.” Aviator glasses guy clapped his hands. “Now that you two are reacquainted, it’s time to get ready. Jun, you’re going to be AI’s personal guard.”

Ash’s cheeks flushed again before he looked away. Maybe I was supposed to refer to him as AI, but he didn’t look much different from the kid I remembered seeing in the halls of our high school. “Okay, but are you sure I’m qualified for that?” I mean, I didn’t mind, but I didn’t want Ash to get hurt because of me.

“You don’t really need any qualifications.” The guy wrinkled his forehead. 

**That's ten, but I've included the rest of the scene so you can find out that some of you guessed correctly last weekend.**

“If you see someone getting rowdy, and think they might be a threat, you get AI out of there. That’s it. Just watch the crowd. Besides, when AI learned you’d be helping us today, he insisted you fill the role.”

I automatically glanced at Ash, whose cheeks had turned even redder than before. Kathie had been told it was the staff I’d helped last night, so maybe this was info for me only. “Oh, okay then.” If he made the request, I wouldn’t argue. Besides, my leopard cat seemed agreeable to the role, more confident than I felt. In fact, that part of me became more active around Ash. Even last night. Though I’d brushed it off as being on edge due to a suspicious customer.

Except for the urge to go for the occasional evening prowl, this was really the most I’d been in tune with my leopard cat since high school. But I couldn’t let it take control. This was a serious job, and the repercussions from fucking up would follow me for the rest of my life. I was Ash’s personal guard, and I would be by his side until I was granted leave.
